I had heard about a movie that Jayne Mansfield did called "The Fat Spy" and I was curious about what it was like. It was bad. Bad. What makes it so bad is that it's boring. The cast includes Jack E. Leonard, Brian Donlevy, Phyllis Diller and Jayne Mansfield - out of those names, it's really unfortunate that Jayne is billed fourth, because at least she livens the movie with her scenes, played wi...

Another deep dive into a Motown Classic; "A Bird In The Hand (Is Worth Two In the Bush)" in four flavors; mono/45 mix, stereo mix, and isolated left and right channels. The riff that opens this song, and forms the foundation of it, has to go down as one of Motown's best and most exciting riffs ever. Yay!!!! I love your comment and the way this song made you feel- especially being that this is the first time you're hearing this. Kim Weston was one of Motown's must hidden treasures. The woman was pretty young, early 20s and yet she sounded so all-knowing, very much a Woman who knew everything. I hope you enjoy finding out all the many songs this wonderful Lady recorded- both at Motown and the music she did when she left the label. I got an unbelievable thrill a few years ago when I got a chance to talk to her by phone, thanks to a friend who was working for her. Kim is one of the most down-to-earth people you could even know. Thanks for a great comment- I enjoyed reading it!

Stereo starts at 2:47. This has always been one of my favorite songs - it is right up their with "Psychedic Shack" and "Going to a Go Go" in theme - and the album was one of my favorite studio albums by the group along with "One Dozen Roses", both of which, coincidently, included "Tears of a Clown" (which became the name of this album after the success of the single)! Thanks for giving us a taste of both the mono and the stereo versions of the song!

This has one of the funkiest arrangements going for it. The drums almost steal the show but really for me, it's the repeating 5-note riff being relentlessly played during the choruses by the churchy organ, piano, vibes, and guitars. The combination of all those instruments just jamming on that riff is incredible, especially at the end.

I have to get my ears attuned to the version with The Andantes because I grew up with the non-Andantes version, so this is a bit "new" to me.

Yes. I had completely forgotten about the single being different from the mono album version. I didn't even know about the single version until I got The Complete Motown Singles set. To be honest, after years of hearing the album versions, the Andantes' voices just sound so strange here. But when I read your comment I thought it should be included as well.

I think the song may have been too dated when it came out. It didn't even make the R&B chart and I'm sure it's because urban radio felt it was too old of a sound, being so close to Twist And Shout that had been a hit two years earlier. It reminds me of his fast music changed in the 70s and 80s - if someone put out a record that had a beat that was out of step with whatever the latest dance was, that record went nowhere. Fast. I really feel that may have been the problem with this record coming out in '66.

Shades of Twist and Shout with this song. Motown had gold in their hands but didn’t put it to good use. Often Motown gave the Isley Brothers leftovers to record. Even This Old Heart was planned for the Supremes.but instead given to the Isley Brothers. Once the Isley Brothers recorded it, they owned it. Lastly, perhaps the Isley Brothers were developing into their own powerful musical talent that could not be limited or contained by the formula Motown machine.

Such fantastic points. This one though has always bugged me. It's not a bad record, it's a fun record and like you said, the first time I ever heard it I instantly thought this was a nod to their "Twist and Shout" days. But I've never understood why Motown went with it as a follow up to "This Old Heart Of Mine," which to me sounded like the group breaking new ground. So why regress with a throwback? If anything, "Take Some Time Out" might have been a good first song - but only because they had "This Old Heart," which sounded like an automatic winner, I can see why they held it back. But the ideal song to follow "This Old Heart" would have been "I Guess I'll Always Love You"- and I thought that WAS the follow up for along time. When I found out they went with this one, it just didn't make sense back then and it still doesn't make sense.

Has anyone else ever noticed the "WOO HOO WOO HOO" part that pops up throughout are exactly the same every single time? They never vary in inflection or duration. In fact, it sounds as if maybe those whoops were added in after the song was recorded - I'd bet that the brothers went into the studio, sang "WOO HOO" few times and the sound engineer or producer Robert Gordy simply spliced together the best two "WOOs" to fit within a four-beat bar and dubbed that edit in at the spot we're hearing.

God I love that perky little guitar riff that runs throughout this one. For some reason it reminds me of something you'd hear on the soundtrack of one of those sixties cartoons, like "Prince Planet," that were made in Japan.

I used to have a lot of WNEW jingles on my channel as well as an air check of the final few minutes of WNEW but someone bought the online rights to the jingles and was filing copyright claims on everything WNEW. I ended up with two copyright strikes and would have lost my channel if I hadn't been paying attention and deleted everything before UA-cam had a chance to hit me with a third strike. One of the strikes was for the complete song of the Milkman's Matinee by Les Brown which I'm sure they didn't own the copyrights on but I wasn't going to fight it. I used to go to bed to the Milkman's Matinee every night and loved when the news was ending and the first trumpet notes of the intro would start just after midnight. Thanks for posting these. I recognize a few of them from my collection but these are far better quality as most of mine were recorded off air.

I'm sorry to hear about the turmoil you went through! I would have loved hearing that aircheck and the jingles. I've come to realize, it's really like Russian Roulette as far as getting hit with copyright claims- I once had a Paul Petersen song that was up for several years, then out of the blue, it got hit with the copyright claim. Sometimes, you'll find something you got pegged for can get by on someone else's channel. I'm not sure how that works, but I'm glad you told me about your situation so that if I suddenly find this has been pulled down, I won't be surprised.

Lol! Sometimes I'm posting things in the middle of the night and it doesn't occur to me to mention it as well on Facebook. I gotta say, doing these, spending time assembling everything, it gives me a lot of time to really appreciate these artists, and I've been getting a deeper appreciation for Cal's approach to these songs. She's something of a Cool Cat; hers is the mastery of understated elegance, but with just enough of a tinge of the Blues. The one performance that is rather uncharacteristic is "Let Love Live" where she takes on a surprisingly tougher all-out delivery. There will be more of these mono/stereo deals for The Velvelettes on the horizon. And I have an idea for gathering and tying together the group's singles in a special playlist that I think you'll appreciate. But that's a little way off in the future...
